Originally restored in 2005 by the North Texas Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society, the historic Wurlitzer Theatre Organ found new life in 2006 at the McKinney Performing Arts Center. For nearly two decades, it served as a centerpiece of entertainment and culture, accompanying silent films, enhancing concerts, and creating lasting memories for all who experienced its sound.
In 2026, as the City of McKinney began a new phase of building renovations, the space housing the organ was needed for future use. With the instrument no longer actively played, its future became uncertain. In a generous and thoughtful decision, the City reached out to the Texas Theatre in McGregor, offering an opportunity to preserve the organ and continue its legacy rather than see it fade into history.

What followed was a true community effort. Over several weeks, dedicated volunteers carefully cataloged, disassembled, and transported the organ with great care and respect for its craftsmanship and history. We are incredibly grateful to the City of McKinney for their partnership, flexibility, and hands-on support throughout the process. A special thank you to Jim Pitts, Joshua Rutherford, Les and Paula Marshall, Trey Concilio, Robert Brown, Camryn Thane, Brad King, and the many friends and family members—including Austin King, Danny Brooke, Will, and Teran—who gave their time, strength, and heart to this effort. We are also deeply thankful to the family at Amy’s Attic Storage for their generous donation of storage space, ensuring the organ is safely preserved during this transition.

Today, plans are underway to restore and install this remarkable Wurlitzer inside the historic 1912 Texas Theatre in McGregor. This effort represents more than preservation—it is a revival. With sincere gratitude for everyone who helped make this possible, we look forward to the day this instrument once again fills a theatre with music, bringing history, community, and new memories together.
